The accreditation reflects our ongoing commitment to building carbon literacy across GC, empowering colleagues to take practical action to reduce carbon emissions and support our journey towards net zero.

Becoming a Carbon Literate Organisation

Carbon Literacy training helps colleagues understand the science behind climate change and empowers them to take action to reduce emissions at an individual, community and organisational level.

More than 450 colleagues have attended Carbon Literacy training, with 330 achieving formal certification. Colleagues have committed to actions that reduce both their own and the Growth Company's carbon footprint, including car sharing, reducing food waste, and educating the people and businesses we work with on climate issues.

One colleague putting this learning into practice is Scott Whittaker, Green Economy’s Team Support Co-ordinator. As part of his Carbon Literacy pledge, Scott encouraged neighbours in Chorlton, Greater Manchester to reduce supermarket deliveries and support local shops. What started as conversations expanded into school uniform swaps and a food-sharing group, helping to bring the community closer together through sustainable choices and shared action.

At work, Scott has continued to support The Growth Company's sustainability efforts through the delivery of Carbon Literacy and Journey to Net Zero training. Working with colleagues across the organisation, he has helped engage more than 350 businesses across Greater Manchester in sustainability and net zero training, with more than 150 participants going on to achieve formal certification.

Together, the actions of colleagues and their commitments have contributed to an estimated saving of 238 tCO2e. Alongside wider organisational measures, this has helped support a 44% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions per full-time employee since our 2019 baseline.

Claire Fallon, Group Sustainability Manager at The Growth Company, said:

"This is a fantastic achievement for GC and one that we should all be proud of. The Silver accreditation recognises the collective efforts of colleagues across the organisation who have invested their time in learning more about climate change and, most importantly, taking action. It's proof that when we work together, even small changes can add up to make a significant impact. Thank you to everyone who has played a part in helping us reach this milestone."

Phil Korbel, Co-Founder and Director of External Relations at The Carbon Literacy Project, said:

"Carbon Literacy is an essential skill, vital to every workplace, community and place of study. By becoming a Silver accredited Carbon Literate Organisation, The Growth Company has demonstrated its commitment to genuine low-carbon action, environmental and economic impact, and the building of a low-carbon future for us all."
